How I Loved My Unemployed Self
This January, a former job kicked me to the curb. It’s the first instance of termination in my professional pursuits. At first, I felt shocked and insulted because I only worked there for nine days. I either wasn’t their cup of tea; they thought I couldn’t perform the job or both. I’ll never know. It doesn’t matter, and frankly, I don’t give a flying you know what anymore. Once unemployed, I knew that the almighty practice of self-love was definite. I vowed to love my unemployed self. The old never before fired me is the same person who got canned.
I GOT FIRED!

After the shock and anger due to an unfair shot subsided, I felt a massive wave of relief come over me. I can breathe. I can work on Planet Self Love. I can live my days not centered around a rigid schedule. Did I feel worried about my finances? Sure, but that worry wasn’t as intense as the feeling of relief.
If you ever find yourself unemployed, please don’t beat yourself up. Your job or career doesn’t define you. Whatever your profession is, that is ONE aspect of the glorious multi-faceted wonders that compose the unique entity of your being.
Maybe you’re like, cool, but I still need to make money.
I get it.
You could apply for delivery services such as Door Dash or Instacart if you either have no savings or don’t want to touch your savings. Don’t forget about attempting unemployment even if you feel you may not receive a valid claim. It never hurts to try!
You could also ride in style the way I did for months; by living off of your savings for as long as possible. Cool beans. It was nice while it lasted, woooo!
I’m happy to share with you some of the ways that I loved my unemployed self. This self-love stuff is new to me. I didn’t love myself properly for years. Now that I’ve started, being told to pack up my things and not to return was much easier to handle.
I was sad that I’d miss out on the free lox for breakfast but other than that; my life is still as great as it was prior. Lox is a tad bit pricey, but I’m working on building my empire. I’ll still be able to have lox whenever I feel like it. Muahahahaha.
Here are some of the ways I practiced self-love during my relaxing unemployment vacation that went by WAY TOO FAST:
I worked on a goal
Since becoming unemployed, I had more free time to work on Planet Self Love. I was super excited about that. I wasn’t passionate about the job I held for nine days or the job before that, or the job before that. I think you get the point. However, Planet Self Love sparks joy, fulfillment, creativity, and passion into my being. So having more time to work on it felt pretty great. What personal accomplishment can you achieve with your newly gained free time?
I tried to improve my Zzz’s
Before becoming unemployed, I was suffering from a bout of insomnia. The fact that I didn’t have to be at an office at a specific time everyday relaxed me immensely. In turn, I was able to improve upon my quality and duration of sleep. Every night wasn’t a homerun slumber, but my nightly sessions with Mr. Sandman definitely improved.
I tried to drink as much H20 as possible
I tried my best to stay hydrated and drink as much water as possible throughout the day. I didn’t feel judged peeing a million times in my own home. Whereas at the office, I’d attempt to be more mindful of my water intake, so I didn’t have to use the little girl’s room excessively. However, I’d like to switch up that way of thinking. I will try my best to navigate healthy water consumption and multiple bathroom trips. By the way, lemon water is so much tastier than plain if you’re sick of the blandness. Cucumber water is also lovely. There are ways to spice up your water drinking so that you can get some flavor.
I worked on maintaining a positive attitude
I believe that things meant for me will come. Feeling pissed about getting fired was acceptable to me for about a day. After the day it happened, I told myself to move on, find something much better, and continue working on PSL. I also reminded myself that I AM NOT MY JOB.
Say it out loud with me, “I AM NOT MY JOB!”
I am so much more than a title I hold to make some cash. I could become a lawyer or doctor, but if my heart and mind aren’t happy, that title won’t do $hit. I refuse to let titles or labels define the multifacetedness of my experience as a human. I refuse to fit into a box, and so should you!
I cleaned my room
Okay, so this one is a little half a$$ed, but I did get rid of a box that went to the Lupus Foundation and got rid of things that I didn’t need anymore. When you hold a standard forty-hour a week job, cleaning can quickly turn into the most dreaded of tasks. I had all this free time, so I figured I should use SOME to clean my space. And consequently, I felt much better after some necessary cleaning. Baby steps with the cleaning help tremendously, especially when you have a lot to tackle.
I did a 30-day yoga challenge
Aside from working on PSL, this yoga challenge was a highlight of my unemployment. I completed the 30-day morning yoga movement challenge hosted by Yoga With Kassandra. Morning times on my mat was such a feel-good way to start my days feeling looser, calmer, and happier. Yoga has been such a game-changer for me, so it will always make an appearance in my life, unemployed or not. See you on the mat! Hehe.
I hope this list of what I found to be helpful during my unemployment was helpful to you!
If you’re unemployed right now, it’s all good. It’s the universe’s way of making room for something more suited for you. Your unemployment status has no bearing on you as a person. If your heart is in the right place, then there’s no need to worry. If you feel like your heart isn’t in the right place for whatever reason, whatever you do, don’t trick yourself to thinking that you aren’t good enough. You’re more than enough. Perhaps you’re experiencing a bumpy part of your journey. That’s totally ok. And you’re totally awesome whether you’re paid to clean up dog poop, don’t have a job, or are a millionaire!
Best of luck to you, beautiful Starchild. May the cosmos assist you in finding your dream job!
XoXo,
Mandy
